Stutsman Offroad in Jamestown, North Dakota, is a growing off-road vehicle dealership connected to the local Harley-Davidson dealership. Ryder, who oversees the offroad division, began his journey with the company as a high schooler washing Harleys. From there, he moved up to oil changes and basic mechanic work.

Rising through the Ranks

During his freshman year of college, Ryder returned to help launch Stutsman Offroad, working on simple mechanical tasks. By the following summer, he had taken on more responsibility, tackling heavier-duty mechanic work on off-road vehicles and learning part numbers while answering service questions. In his junior year, Stutsman Offroad expanded to include CanAm alongside Polaris, while the team worked to build a strong customer base through excellent service.

“We make sure the customer is happy,” Ryder explains. “We work hard, but it’s fun. Everyone has a better day when employees smile and customers feel welcome.”

As the off-road division grew, the General Manager, John, who oversees Harley-Davidson, became busier, especially after the loss of a technician. Ryder stepped in to assist, helping with customers and taking on more responsibility. Over time, he naturally took charge of the front end of the offroad division, although he doesn’t consider himself the GM. “It was a happy accident,” Ryder says, noting how the opportunity arose through his willingness to help wherever needed.

Building a Strong Foundation: Service, Learning, and Leadership

He attributes much of his success to Karl Christian, the owner of the dealership, and John. “Karl is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. His approach to treating customers is something I’ve learned from. Both Karl and John gave me great opportunities, and I can’t thank them enough.”

At just 23, Ryder continues to learn every day. “Customers sometimes know more than I do, but I pick up something new all the time. I’ve always been hands-on—my clothes are usually black with grease by the end of the day.”

His advice? “Keep an open mind. Learn from your customers and your team. If you don’t know something, admit it, but go find the answer. Once you do, you’ll know it moving forward. Communication is essential, and collaboration keeps you grounded.”

For Ryder, staying busy and continuously learning is key. “There’s always something to do in this industry. The skills you gain here will help you in life, whether it’s your social life or relationships.”

With Ryder overseeing the offroad division, Stutsman Offroad is steadily building a strong reputation for quality service and customer care.
